In November, we invited Zine maker Jean McEwan to come in and do some Zine-making workshops with the level one students. To inspire them, she brought in some lovely examples of these typically hand-made, photocopied, small circulation expressions of fandom, poetry, personal foibles and tastes. The students were also treated to a peek at Ian’s fanzine collection, including his own juvenile and highly pretentious effort from a long time ago, plus one on baseball (made in Sleaford!), and a copy of ‘Caff’, the fanzine created back in 1987 by St Etienne’s Bob Stanley. All this resulted in a happy and productive time, with all the students cutting, sticking, collaging and expressing themselves to their heart’s content.
