Chitter Chatter is an event which invites industry members to give a talk, run a short workshop or put on portfolio sessions with Graphic design students from all three levels. For each Chitter Chatter event there is a small charge and the money from these events goes towards the fundraising of the level 3 students end of year show. Freelance designer, James Cann visited back in November and gave an insightful talk on the importance of networking and useful tips on how to get a job within the graphic design industry. Marcus Marritt travelled to us to share his knowledge around his role as an illustrator and Graphic Designer. London-based Martin Lambie-Nairn gave an informal presentation of his work before opening up a discussion session around his presentation and experiences. Shaun Cole, from Born Agency in Lincoln, spoke about how he has approached clients he wanted to work for, and offered his insights into the realities of agency life. Tom Etherington visited us from Penguin Random House and spoke about the various book design project he has worked on. He even kindly some of these physical ‘gems’ with the students! It was really interesting to see Tom’s thought and design process when approaching each task. Finally, most recently Domenic Lippa, from Pentagram in London, visited the University to share his personal journey as a designer, along with top tips on Typography and design advice.
Under the direction of Jessica Ormond and her Chitter Chatter team these talks have been of immense value, in facilitating contact with Industry, but also in helping the students raise money for their Show. We are incredibly grateful to these creatives for giving up their time to speak to us and we look forward to seeing you at Show 19!
